The Left Column
illustrates a series of Projected Soundings for Springfield, MO
(SGF) and Topeka, KS (TOP). These projections were derived from the
computer model on Tuesday evening at about 10:00 pm. The Right Column
illustrates actual measurements in the form of Balloon Soundings. These
represent morning (6 am) and evening (6 pm) soundings for Wednesday (March 6).
All plots are developed on the same Skew-T format and scale factors yielding a
direct comparison. The purpose of this is to illustrate the ability to
project a profile of atmospheric conditions some 12-18 hours in advance. |

We are most interested in the lower 5,000 feet (up to the 850
mb level). These plots go up to about 24,000 feet (400 mb level).
The Red line represents the temperature profile, while the green line represents
Dew Point depression -- indirectly representing moisture content at a given
level. Also of interest is the Dry Adiabat (black lines slanted to the
left) and
Isotherms (red lines slanted to the right). Temperatures are expressed in degrees
Centigrade. The Wind profile displays wind flags referenced to true north,
and speed in knots.
